Effie Trinket Costume DIY

Halloween is coming up and the scramble to find a Halloween costume has begun! To help you in your search for the perfect Halloween Costume, we are showing you how we make some of our costumes for the Halloween Carnival. Look at our Pinterest Page to look at more ideas for Halloween Costumes.

Effie Trinket: Total Cost under $30

The Capitol citizen from the Hunger Games series is known for her crazy costumes. She wears one color in all the possible shades. People will recognize the costume if you mimic a costume from the movie, but to save on time and money you can capture the basic elements of the costume, which is what we did. For our Effie Trinket costume we went to the DI in Provo and found an assortment of different shades of red. Effie wears coats with puffy sleeves and pencil skirts with leggings or tights and ridiculous shoes, all of which can be found in thrift shops.

Once we assembled the color-schemed costume we put together her accessories. Her hair comes in many colors but most people remember her for her picked out blond hair- easily imitated with a blond wig. She wears extravagant hair pieces, we chose a bright red flower, but anything will work, as long as it is big, colorful and over the top.

To add to the jacket we made feather shoulder pads with cardboard, glue gun and red feathers. To connect feathers to the rest of the costume we made feather wrist bands to put on the white gloves for the costumes.

Effie Trinket's make-up is a big part of her appearances as well. There are many you tube videos on how to do you make-up, and we'll show you our basic version. We powdered the face pale, added dramatic shading to the eyelids and underneath the eyes and added eye extensions. Then we painted just the center of the lips for the baby doll look.

Add all the elements together and you have your very own Effie Trinket Halloween Costume! Extra details you can include to make this costume your own are: painted nails, body rhinestones or jewels, high heels, earrings, and eyelash extensions.

Halloween Sneak Peek!

Here is a sneak peak at the Haunted House, part of the Provo City Halloween Carnival on October 31st. The event runs from 5:00-10:00pm on Thursday, Halloween, at the Provo Recreation Center. Check back daily for more previews of the Halloween Carnival!

The event staff is putting all our spare time into setting up this part of our annual event. Eric Layland, our haunted house mastermind, is our lead on this project; he has created ideas for a haunted forest, a zombie zone, and killer closet. This year the haunted house will be held in the old veterans pool facility building, which makes it that much scarier! Because it is held in the old vet’s pool locker rooms, we can decorate the place however we want. This includes dripping and splashing Tide Laundry Detergent all over the walls. Now why would we do that? Because in a black light, the Tide GLOWS! It looks like blood dripping down the doors with cryptic messages smeared on the walls. To see the full effect of Tide in black light, come to the Halloween Carnival. For Provo Center members it is free, for all else who want to come enjoy it is $5 for adults, $4 for children. For the Haunted House we recommend that the participants be 10 years or older so we don’t give any of the little-ones nightmares. We will see you there!

Special Thanks to --- the creator of The Anguish Asylum at Provo Town Centre for letting us tour his Haunted House to glean ideas. Check it out at Provo Towne Centre Mall.

Fish Kite Tutorial

The Utah Lake Festival is on Saturday, June 4th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Utah Lake State Park. There will be games, crafts, booths, entertainment, free food, demonstrations, free fishing, and much more! In preparation for the event, here is a step by step tutorial to make a fun and colorful fish kite!

Step 1: Select a sheet of tissue paper and fold it in half "like a hamburger".

Step 2: Glue a strip of card stock on one side your tissue paper. (The card stock will create the fish's mouth.)

Step 3:  Staple the card stock ends together and then glue the tissue paper together to create a tube. (This will be the fish's body.)

Step 4: Then create a tail for your fish by cutting out a triangle.

Step 5: To create the gills for your fish choose another sheet of tissue paper just smaller than the length of the fishes body. Fold in half "like a hamburger".

Step 6: Then cut a semicircle to create the gills.

Step 7: Glue the gills onto your fish along the mouth line.

Step 8: Then glue fins and eyes onto your fish and decorate it however you like.

Step 9: Punch 4 holes around the fishes mouth.

Step 10: Tie yarn or string through each hole and then tie all 4 strings together.

Your kite is now ready to fly!
